When I jumped into the Resistance Retribution demo, it was the first time I had ever heard or seen anything concerning the world of Resistance. My knowledge of the game consisted of that it was basically a next gen halo, a-la gears of war. The opening cinematic did a fairly good job of confusing me while trying to explain a long story in a short period of time. An in-game yelling match ensues between you and a fellow soldier, and the almost believable voice dialogue sets the tone.

The opening fight sequence has you stop and pop against some flying robot drones that look like they were torn from the pages of Half Life 2. The "hide" mechanic is automatic which seems to work quiet well on low cover and not as well the corners of walls. The aiming can either be done with the face buttons, or switched to the analog stick. Trying both ways I found that since I am used to aiming with my right hand, it was easier to use the face buttons to aim and the analog stick to control movement. Once I overcame the awkward aiming and realized that the auto aim took-over in a box that covered about 1/3 of my screen, my game play moved forward.

The textures in the game are impressively high resolution, and some of the best I have seen on PSP, next to God of War. Fog and lighting effects also seemed to blend well with the art style. Graphically the game ran very smooth with almost zero slowdown in larger firefights. As I ran frantically through the level, hitting switches and riding alien platforms, chasing the disembodied voice of a woman who was assumed to be in one of the many liquid filled tubes that were carrying human bodies to different locations within the alien base, I thought to myself, "how is she breathing, let alone talking?" The next room I was herded into gave me a nifty new weapon and started up a boss fight. The boss kicked my ass at first and the strategy to get his health down fast took me a few tries to master. The new weapon I received had the ability to deploy a small force field for a short period of time, giving me a nice spot to cower in, while the giant AT ST walker look-alike unloaded his laser chaingun. When I had lured him close enough to my platform I would hit a switch that would send electricity screaming down from the ceiling to fry his ass.

Although the controls are clunky, the auto-aim almost too easy, the storyline slightly cliche, and the demo very short, overall Resistance Retribution is one of the best shooter experiences I have had on the PSP. Clean graphics, great all around sound, and good use of artistic style had me looking for more at the end of this very short demo.
I rate this demo a 7500 out of 9000. Looking forward to the full release.
